Granite Lanterns (Ishi-Doro)

Stone lanterns were originally introduced into Japan from China over a thousand years ago. The first ones were made of metal and primarily used to light doorways to shrines and temples. They were later made of stone for use in Japanese gardens, but it wasn't until they were introduced into Japanese tea gardens by Japanese tea-master Sen-no-Rikkyu did they really become a major garden element. Japanese tea ceremonies were often held in the evenings and light was needed to guide guests to the tea room. Stone lanterns can be classified into four basic categories; tachi-gata (pedestal lanterns), ikekomi-gata (buried lanterns), oki-gata (small, set lanterns) and yukimi-gata (snow-viewing lanterns). Today, stone lanterns are primarily used for garden enhancements and for visual delight.

This style of lantern dates back to the early "Ashikaga period" our Kasugas are carved from G-603 salt & pepper gray granite and are available in three different heights, to suit the type and size of garden or location. Pre-drilled for lighting cable.

Pagoda

The delicate art of stone carving magnificently portrayed in this solid granite Pagoda. A Pagoda or Stupa serves as a memorial to Buddha honouring his life and teachings, and interestingly the pagodas always have an odd number of tiers .

This five tiered Stupa represents the five natural elements of the universe, earth, water, fire, wind and metal, the nine rings from the top tier relate to the nine heavens of Buddhism. A lotus, the symbol for Buddha crowns the top of the Pagoda. Usually placed on a hillside or next to a path. This Magnificent Pagoda is 1500mm tall and 180kg.
